The piece

Unsigned kozuka attributed to the Kaga Gotō school, depicting Wang Xiang from the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars in takabori with gold and silver iroe on a shakudō nanako ground.

Unsigned kozuka attributed by the original seller to the Kaga Gotō school, the branch of the Gotō family established in Kanazawa in the service of the lords of Kaga. It depicts the story of Wang Xiang (Ōshō in Japanese reading), one of the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars: in the depth of winter, to satisfy his stepmother's wish for fish, he lay down on the frozen river, the ice melted and two fish leapt out. On the left, a silver plate with cracked ice engraved in kebori and a diagonal band of gold; in the centre, the figure of Wang Xiang in silver takabori with gold details, beside silver waves from which two golden fish leap; on the right, the shakudō nanako ground with a tree and a rock in gold iroe. The reverse is a gold-toned plate with a striated texture, unsigned. The photographs show an even black patina on the shakudō, intact reliefs and slight wear to the gilding at the corners of the reverse. It measures 97.2 × 14.6 mm according to the original seller and comes in an uninscribed paulownia box. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
