Description
Unsigned (mumei) fuchi-kashira attributed by its NBTHK paper to the Mino school, a workshop known for motifs carved in deep relief over a granular ground. The theme is takara-zukushi, the treasures of good fortune: according to the original seller, the mallet of wealth (uchide no kozuchi), the jewel (hōju), the cloak and hat of invisibility (kakuremino and kakuregasa) and the storehouse key. The photographs show them linked by twisted cords, with what appear to be clove buds (chōji) on the fuchi. The metal is shakudō with a black patina over an ishime ground, and the paper describes the carving as sukidashi fukabori, deep relief obtained by cutting back the ground. The photographs show an even black patina, crisp relief, gilt shitodome on the kashira and a copper plate on the fuchi; the inside of the kashira keeps the rough working surface, and two or three tiny points where light passes through can be seen in the wall of the fuchi. It comes with an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper, number 2010886, dated 26 September 2024, and an uninscribed wooden display box.
