The piece
A kozuka and kōgai set in shakudō nanako with family crests in gold, attributed by the NBTHK to Gotō Eijō, sixth master of the main Gotō line, with Jūyō Tōsōgu papers.
A futatokoromono comprising a kozuka and a kōgai, unsigned, attributed as a set by the NBTHK 重要刀装具 (Jūyō Tōsōgu) paper, 33rd session, to 無銘 栄乗 (mumei Eijō), sixth generation of the main Gotō house, the workshop that served the shōguns and whose work is known as iebori. The theme is kamon-chirashi: on a black shakudō nanako ground, both pieces carry the mitsuba-aoi crest at the centre, the nihikiryō on one side and the mitsudomoe on the other, carved in takabori and gilt in iroe; on the kozuka two of the crests slightly overlap. The body of the kōgai and the frames are gold. According to the setsumei, the set comes from a shogunal household and is a reference for the crests of Momoyama-period iebori, with severe, highly dignified carving. The photographs show intact nanako, crisp relief and no visible loss of gold. Dimensions per the paper: kozuka 9.6 × 1.4 cm; kōgai 21.0 cm long and 1.2 cm across the shoulders. Presented in a wooden box lined in purple.
