The piece
Shakudō mitokoromono with chrysanthemum sprays in takabori and gold and silver iroe, unsigned; the original seller attributes it to Gotō Jujō Mitsumasa, twelfth head of the Gotō house.
A three-piece set (mitokoromono): kozuka, kōgai and a pair of menuki, all on the theme of chrysanthemum sprays. The photographs show the kozuka and kōgai plates in shakudō with a fine, even nanako ground, from which a spray of gold, silver and shakudō chrysanthemums rises in takabori, the stems ending in undulating ribbons; the frame and back are of gilt-coloured metal with a file-mark finish. The menuki repeat the motif in the round in shakudō with gold and silver iroe. None of the pieces is signed. The original seller attributes the set to Gotō Jujō Mitsumasa (1695–1742), twelfth head of the main Gotō line, and declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper, which does not appear in the photographs. The style —nanako, a restrained composition and gold and silver colour on shakudō— is characteristic of the Gotō school of the mid-Edo period. Condition is good: crisp carving, gilding preserved on the high points and nanako unflattened; the backs of the menuki show a dark patina with coppery areas. It comes in a paulownia box with cushion, without any visible inscription.
