The piece
Polished shakudō tsuba signed Gotō Mitsutada with kaō, showing a peasant and a basket of autumn grasses in takabori and iroe of gold, silver and copper. Late Edo period.
Rounded mokkō-shaped tsuba in black shakudō with a polished (migaki) finish. The front shows a seated peasant with a sickle on his back, carved in takabori with a gilt kimono and silver limbs, beside a wicker basket filled with autumn grasses and flowers in gold, silver and copper; below, grasses and a dragonfly in zōgan. The back continues the theme with autumn grasses and two dragonflies. The hitsu-ana are lined in gold and silver. The photographs show the signature carved on the back, Gotō Mitsutada with his kaō. According to the original seller, Mitsutada (1806–1868) was the fifth master of the Shichiroemon branch of the Gotō family and received the title of hokkyō; the piece draws on early Gotō work, with fine detail in the kimono and the woven basket. The patina is deep and even, with no visible rust or knocks. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
