The piece
Shakudō nanako fuchi-kashira with an auspicious New Year theme in takabori and iroe, signed by Hamano Shōzui with his art name Miboku at the age of 71.
Fuchi-kashira by Hamano Shōzui (1696–1769), a leading pupil of Nara Toshinaga and founder of the Hamano school, one of the pillars of the Nara tradition. The signature, cut into the copper plate of the fuchi, reads 味墨政随 行年七十一才 (Miboku Shōzui gyōnen shichijūichi-sai), "Miboku Shōzui, at the age of 71", placing the work in his late period. The theme is an auspicious New Year one: on the fuchi, two figures in high relief — one holding a silver fan, the other with a reddish copper face — probably manzai dancers; on the kashira, a gold shimenawa rope with an urajiro fern leaf and silver shide paper strips. Shakudō ground with fine, even nanako, figures in takabori with iroe in gold, silver and copper. The photographs show crisp nanako, intact gold details and a patina without signs of repatination. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs. Declared dimensions: fuchi 3.8 × 1.37 cm; kashira 3.28 × 1.86 cm.
