The piece
Shakudō nanako fuchi-kashira with Bishamonten and Benzaiten in gold high relief, attributed to Gotō Renjō, tenth master of the Gotō main line.
Fuchi-kashira attributed to Gotō Renjō, tenth master of the Gotō main line, born in 1628 and head of the house from 1652 to 1697 according to the original seller. The kashira shows Bishamonten seated in armour holding a spear; the fuchi shows Benzaiten playing the biwa amid floating scarves: two of the Seven Gods of Fortune. Both figures are in solid gold takabori, with finely chiselled faces and robes, on a black shakudō ground of fine, even nanako. The copper tenjōgane of the fuchi is engraved 後藤廉乘 光晃 (Gotō Renjō Mitsuaki) with a kaō: this is not a signature but an attribution by a later Gotō master, Mitsuaki, assigning the work to Renjō. The photographs show an intact patina and gold without losses, with fine scratches on the tenjōgane and light marks on the plain reverse of the fuchi. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs. Declared dimensions: fuchi 3.79 × 1.46 cm; kashira 3.34 × 1.9 cm.
