The piece
Shakudō nanako fuchi-kashira with horses in takabori and gold iroe, signed Sōyo with kaō, from the mid-Edo Yokoya school.
Fuchi-kashira of the Yokoya school, signed 宗與 (Sōyo) with his kaō on the copper tenjō of the fuchi. The original seller attributes it to Yokoya Sōyo, born in Edo in 1700, adopted son of Sōmin and head of the school from the age of 34. The theme is the horse: on the kashira, a horse seen from behind turning its head; on the fuchi, a rearing horse and, on the other side, a horse's head. The figures are carved in takabori of polished shakudō over a fine, even nanako ground, with manes, tails and hooves in gold iroe and the hair engraved in kebori. According to the original seller, Sōyo worked mostly in katakiribori on shibuichi, and works in takabori iroe on shakudō nanako are rare in his output. The photographs show good condition: crisp nanako, deep black patina, intact gold and only light scuffs on the tenjō. Dimensions according to the original seller: fuchi 3.87 × 1.25 cm, kashira 3.44 × 1.83 cm. The seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
