The piece

Pair of gilt shibuichi menuki with peonies, unsigned and attributed to the Ezo school by an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper.

Pair of unsigned (mumei) menuki with peonies, attributed to the Ezo school. By tradition, Ezo is the name given to a group of sword-fitting makers active from the Nanbokuchō period to the early Muromachi period. The photographs show a large peony flower surrounded by leaves, buds and stems, carved in outline relief (katachibori) with generous openwork. The ground is shibuichi and was originally gilded all over with kin-mekki. The gold survives in the recesses and has worn from the high points, revealing the base metal with the aged tone typical of so-called Ezo kanamono. The backs are rough and show no visible damage. According to the original seller, the omote piece measures 3.20 × 1.85 cm and weighs 3.7 g, and the ura piece measures 3.32 × 1.88 cm and weighs 4.1 g. The pair has an NBTHK 特別保存刀装具 (Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu) paper, no. 2003599, dated 28 June 2016. It describes them as 牡丹図目貫 (botan-zu menuki), 無銘 (mumei), 蝦夷 (Ezo), 四分一地 (shibuichi-ji), 容彫 (katachibori) and 金鍍金 (kin-mekki). They are presented in a wooden box lined with fabric.

Strong points

  • NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper attributing them to the Ezo school
  • Very early fittings: Nanbokuchō – early Muromachi tradition
  • Peony in katachibori with generous openwork and good modelling
  • Shibuichi with remains of the original kin-mekki gilding

Points to bear in mind

  • The gilding has worn from the high points, which is typical of Ezo work
  • Attributed to a school, with no signature or individual maker
  • The dating comes from the school tradition: the paper gives no date
