The piece

Round iron tsuba with a pierced wave design, unsigned, attributed by its NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper to Tadatoki of the Akasaka school.

Round (marugata) iron tsuba, unsigned, attributed by its NBTHK paper to Tadatoki of the Akasaka school of Musashi province. The paper describes it as 波濤透鐔 (hatō sukashi tsuba): a pierced design of breaking waves curling into scrolls and crests around the seppa-dai, enclosed by a solid rounded rim (marumimi). This is the characteristic idiom of the Akasaka school, which refined the openwork traditions of Owari and Kyoto into clean silhouettes on well-forged iron. The photographs show an even, dark patina with the texture of the forging visible on the surfaces and the rim, no red rust, and crisp walls to the openwork. The central opening retains its copper sekigane at both ends, as is usual for a tsuba that has been mounted. The original seller gives dimensions of 7.8 × 7.6 cm, a thickness of 0.6 cm at the seppa-dai and a weight of 100 g, and places the activity of Tadatoki (first generation) between 1707 and 1746. The piece comes with its NBTHK 特別保存刀装具 (Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu) paper dated 2 April 2021, which appears in the photographs, and is kept in a plain uninscribed wooden box.
