The piece
Iron tatemarugata tsuba pierced with a reed design (ashi-sukashi), unsigned, attributed to the Owari school by an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper.
Iron tsuba of slightly oval shape (tatemarugata) with a rounded rim (maru-mimi), pierced in ji-sukashi with a reed (ashi) motif whose long leaves radiate from the seppadai towards the rim. The composition is symmetrical top and bottom, as is characteristic of Owari openwork, and the oblique views show that the lines keep their volume. It is unsigned. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, dated 19 June 2020, describes it as 芦透鐔 (ashi-sukashi tsuba), 無銘 (mumei), and attributes it to the 尾張 (Owari) school. According to the original seller it measures 7.9 × 7.7 cm, with a seppadai thickness of 0.4 cm and a weight of 59 g. The photographs show iron with a dark, stable patina and a granular surface, a few spots of brown rust inside the openings and light wear on the rim; the central opening retains its copper sekigane. It comes in a wooden box with a cushion, with no visible inscription.
