Description
Unsigned kozuka attributed by its NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper to the Ko-Kinkō school, the early metalwork tradition outside the main Gotō line. The subject is autumn flowers (akikusa): a frieze of blossoms and buds among stems and leaves running along almost the whole plate. As the paper states and the photographs show, the ground is shakudō with nanako, the motifs are worked in takabori, the flowers and some leaves are clad in gold using the fukurokise iroe technique, and small inlaid silver dots suggest dew. The reverse is a plain plate of polished shakudō. The carving is lively and the gold thick and clean. The photographs show a natural-looking blue-black patina, gold intact on the high points and only fine wear scratches on the reverse. Presented in a wooden box with a cloth-lined tray, with no visible inscription. The paper gives no period: on style and school it is probably early Edo.
