The piece
Shakudō nanako and gold mitokoromono with rats among the implements of the Shikisanban dance, signed by Kikuoka Mitsuyuki and designated Jūyō Tōsōgu by the NBTHK in 2005.
A three-piece set —kozuka, kōgai and a pair of menuki— by Kikuoka Mitsuyuki, founder of the Kikuoka school and pupil of Yanagawa Naomitsu of the Yokoya line. The NBTHK paper (51st session, 13 October 2005) designates it Jūyō Tōsōgu under the title 式三番鼠図三所物 (Shikisanban nezumi-zu mitokoromono): rats playing with the implements of Okina, the ritual piece of the nō theatre, a motif of prosperity and abundance. The kozuka and kōgai have shakudō grounds with fine nanako and gold motifs in high relief, the fur chiselled line by line; the backs are gold with a striated finish. The kozuka shows two rats with a fan and another ceremonial implement; the kōgai, a rat with a cluster of bells (suzu). Both are signed 活剱子菊岡光行 (probable reading: Katsukenshi Kikuoka Mitsuyuki) with kaō, a signature legible in the photographs of the backs. According to the paper, the menuki are solid gold carved in katachibori and signed on a small gold plaque. Measurements per the paper: kozuka 9.73 × 1.47 cm; kōgai 21.1 cm long. The photographs show crisp nanako, gold without visible wear and intact reliefs. It comes in a brocade-covered box.
