The piece

A pair of tsubogasa menuki in shakudō with nanako ground and gold paulownia crests, attributed to Gotō Tokujō and designated Jūyō Tōsōgu, with a 1721 origami by Gotō Tsūjō.

A pair of round menuki in tsubogasa (domed hat) form, unsigned, attributed to Gotō Tokujō, fifth head of the main Gotō line, the iebori school that worked for the great lords. The theme is the go-san kiri crest (paulownia with five and three blossoms): a large kiri in high relief on a central gold medallion with nanako and a beaded border, and six smaller gold kiri crests spaced around the shakudō ring. The photographs show a fine, even nanako ground, leaves raised with crisp veins and precisely cut edges, and two very closely matched pieces. The paper describes the work as 赤銅魚子地 (shakudō nanako-ji), 容彫 (katachi-bori) and 金色絵 (kin iroe). Condition: the front is crisp, with slight rubbing of the gilding on a few high points; the hollowed reverse shows a coppery surface with deposits and a gold rim worn in places. Paper: NBTHK Jūyō Tōsōgu, 2002, attributing the pair to 無銘 徳乗 (mumei Tokujō) in the Momoyama period, accompanied by an origami by Gotō Tsūjō dated 享保六年 (Kyōhō rokunen, 1721), valuing it at 代金弐枚五両 (daikin nimai goryō). The original seller gives about 20.4 mm per piece, 11.0 g for the pair, and a fitted paulownia box.
