The piece
Shakudō tsuba with an ishime ground and a large sotetsu (cycad) in takabori and gold iroe, signed by Ōmori Terumasa, late Edo period.
Round tsuba signed 大森英政 (Ōmori Terumasa) with his kaō on the seppadai. Terumasa, of the Tokuno family, trained with the Ōmori and, according to the original seller, was allowed to use that surname on account of the quality of his work; he excelled at plant subjects. The theme is a sotetsu (cycad, 蘇鉄 (sotetsu)), an exotic-looking plant much prized in gardens of the period. The photographs show a black shakudō ground worked in ishime, from which rises the scaly trunk in gilt takabori, with fronds in gold iroe of slightly different tones and kebori veining; at the base, rocks in shibuichi heightened with gold. One hitsu-ana. Patina and gilding appear intact, with no knocks; only light handling wear on the seppadai. Stated dimensions: 71.5 × 67.5 mm, 6.3 mm thick at the seppadai. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper and a fitted paulownia box; the paper does not appear in the photographs.
