The piece
Iron tsuba signed 後藤春光 (Gotō Harumitsu), with scattered fans in sukidashi-bori, kebori and gold nunome; NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper and published in a monograph on the Kyō Gotō.
Iron tsuba of tate-marugata shape, signed 後藤春光 (Gotō Harumitsu) on the seppa-dai beside the central opening. The design is a senmen chirashi, scattered fans: on the obverse, a gold Mount Fuji among clouds, bamboo, pines with a crescent moon and fans bearing calligraphic inscriptions in gold; on the reverse, a swallow, a mandarin duck on water, pines with gold dots and a fan with grasses. The carving is sukidashi-bori with kebori details, and the gold is applied in nunome-zōgan; the rim, kaku-mimi ko-niku, has its whole edge covered in gold nunome with sayagata and other geometric patterns. According to the original seller it measures 7.80 × 7.48 cm, 0.45 cm thick, weighs 125 g and comes in a paulownia box. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper (no. 220027, 6 February 1989) records it as 扇面散図鐔 (senmen chirashi-zu tsuba), 銘 後藤春光 (mei Gotō Harumitsu). The photographs also include page 259 of 京後藤の研究 (Kyō Gotō no kenkyū, 'Studies in Kyō Gotō'), which publishes this very tsuba, identifies Harumitsu with the seventh Seijō and regards it as one of his early works. In the photographs the gold is intact and the iron looks sound; only a small reddish-brown spot is visible on the upper edge of the central opening.
