The piece
Iron aori-gata tsuba signed by Tokuoki of the Ōtsuki school, bearing the maxim shasei shugi in reisho script and the Big Dipper in gold hira-zōgan running from one face to the other.
Iron tsuba of aori-gata shape with an uchikaeshi rim, signed on the reverse 篤興製 (Tokuoki sei). According to the original seller, Tokuoki was a pupil of Kawarabayashi Hideoki of the Ōtsuki school of Kyoto and made fittings for high-ranking mountings at the end of the Edo period. On the front, beside the central opening, is the added inscription 翠峰書 (Suihō sho, "written by Suihō"), and across the upper field four large characters in reisho style, 舎生取義 (shasei shugi), a maxim urging one to give one's life to uphold righteousness, cut in katakiribori. The Big Dipper, 北斗七星 (Hokuto shichisei), is drawn in gold hira-zōgan: the constellation crosses the rim and continues on the reverse, so that its seven stars are only completed by turning the piece over. The photographs show iron with a granular surface and a stable dark patina, no visible active rust and the gold intact; there are light handling marks on the surface. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs, and dimensions of 78.2 × 71.6 mm, 3.7 mm thick at the seppadai.
