The piece

Shibuichi tsuba signed 美道 (Yoshimichi), depicting Minamoto no Yoritomo hiding after the battle of Ishibashiyama in polychrome high relief. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper.

Tsuba of 竪丸形 (tate-marugata) shape signed 美道 (Yoshimichi), a metalworker of Mito in Hitachi province, active in the late Edo period according to the original seller. The front shows the episode of 石橋山合戦 (Ishibashiyama kassen, 1180): Minamoto no Yoritomo and his men hiding in a cave after their defeat while their pursuers search for them. The warriors, crowded into the lower right, are carved in high relief with gilt armour and faces of reddish copper and dark metal; above them are a tree with shakudō and gold leaves, a silver bird and gilt bamboo. The back, without figures, shows a pine with a copper trunk and kebori needles, rocks, bamboo and a waterfall sprinkled with gold. The paper describes a 四分一磨地 (shibuichi migaki-ji) ground with 鋤出高彫 (sukidashi takabori), 象嵌色絵 (zōgan iroe) and a 角耳小肉 (kaku-mimi ko-niku) rim. The photographs show the inlays complete, with no visible gold loss, rubbing around the seppa-dai and metal fillers (sekigane) in the central opening. The original seller states that the figures in the cave can move, which the photographs cannot confirm. Declared dimensions: 70.1 × 63.9 mm, 4.35 mm thick at the seppa-dai, 99 g. It comes with a 2021 NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper, which accepts the signature.
