The piece

Round iron tsuba with mokume grain and five pierced matsukawa-bishi, signed Kishū-jū Teimei according to the original seller.

Round iron tsuba measuring 8.3 × 8.3 cm according to the original seller, with a kaku-mimi ko-niku rim. The design consists of five matsukawa-bishi motifs (pine-bark lozenges) pierced in negative silhouette, in mon-sukashi, arranged around the central opening. The photographs clearly show the mokume forging grain of the plate; the seller states that it was brought out with acid, a technique the Kishū Teimei school inherited from the Hōan. The signature is chiselled on either side of the central opening; the seller reads it as Kishū-jū Teimei. The photographs show no active rust and no knocks; the edges of the openwork are crisp, and the central opening has sekigane at top and bottom. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper attributing the piece to Kishū-jū Teimei; the paper does not appear in the photographs. The seller dates it to the early Edo period.
