The piece

Matching kozuka and kōgai with a bunch of daffodils in silver and gold high relief on shakudō nanako, both signed by Nakagawa Katsutsugu of Tsuyama (Mimasaka).

Futatokoro (a pair of kozuka and kōgai) on the theme of suisen (水仙), the daffodil. Both pieces are signed 中川勝継 (Nakagawa Katsutsugu) with a kaō (花押), a signature the photographs show clearly on the reverses. According to the original seller, Katsutsugu was the eighth master of the Nakagawa family, metalworkers in the service of the Matsudaira of Tsuyama in Mimasaka province, and father of Shōami Katsuyoshi; he worked in a restrained high-relief and colour style within the Gotō tradition. The photographs show a shakudō ground of fine, very even nanako, from which rises a tied bunch of daffodils in takabori with iroe of silver on the flowers and wrapping and of gold on some leaves; the composition is mirrored on the two pieces. The reverses are of gold with a textured surface and the rims are gilt. The visible condition is excellent: crisp relief, coloured metals intact and no visible knocks. Stated dimensions: kozuka 97.6 × 14.5 mm; kōgai 214 × 12.5 mm. Presented in a kiri box with a fabric-lined bed. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.

Points to bear in mind

  • The Tokubetsu Hozon paper does not appear in the photographs; it rests on the original seller's statement.
