The piece

Round shakudō tsuba with a nanako ground and akikusa (autumn grasses) in takabori with gold and silver iroe, attributed to the Mino school; late Edo period.

Mumei tsuba attributed by the original seller to the Mino school, whose deeply carved autumn-grass style, Mino-bori, arose in the Muromachi period and remained highly prized throughout the Edo period. It is round (marugata), of shakudō with a fine, even nanako ground. The photographs show a garland of akikusa (autumn grasses) running around the rim and reaching towards the centre: chrysanthemums, leaves and ears in takabori with gold and silver iroe, slender reddish stems and, at the bottom, a bundle of stalks tied like a bouquet. Small inlaid silver dots scattered across the field evoke dewdrops. According to the original seller the hitsu-ana have a gold inner rim, and the edge appears gilt and decorated in relief. It measures 81.4 × 80 mm, with a seppa-dai thickness of 4.8 mm. In the photographs the relief is crisp and the gilding intact; the seppa-dai shows the usual mounting marks and the central opening carries sekigane. According to the original seller it comes with an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper to the Mino school, which does not appear in the photographs, and is supplied in a paulownia box with its shifuku (cloth bag).
