The piece

Round copper tsuba with dragonflies and butterflies in high relief of shakudō, gold, silver and mother-of-pearl, attributed by the original seller to the Shōnai school.

Round (maru-gata) copper tsuba measuring 90 × 85 mm according to the original seller, who presents it as a work of the Shōnai school and states an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper that does not appear in the photographs. No signature is visible. Across the upper obverse fly two dragonflies, one in shakudō with gold dots and another with wings of carved mother-of-pearl and a brown body; below, a third shakudō dragonfly with gold rings sits between two butterflies, one in silver and one in shakudō speckled with gold. The reverse repeats the theme with a gold-dotted shakudō dragonfly, a gold-coloured one and a small silver butterfly, accompanied by grass stems following the rim. The figures are inlaid in high relief, with the wing veins finely engraved in kebori and the legs in gold wire. The dragonfly, called kachimushi ("victorious insect"), was a motif prized by the samurai because it only flies forward. The photographs show all inlays complete; the ground has fine scratches, an uneven patina with reddish patches on the reverse and small greenish spots near the left edge of the obverse. The central opening retains small sekigane along its edges. It has hitsu-ana for kozuka and kōgai, the latter with a cloud-shaped outline.
