The piece
Iron tsuba signed 一如作 (Ichijo saku), with the rising sun in gold above engraved young pines; late Edo period, Kurume.
Iron tsuba of tatemarugata (upright oval) shape, signed 一如作 (Ichijo saku). According to the original seller, Ichijo was born in Bunka 9 (1812) in Kurume, Chikugo province, trained in Kyoto under the great master 後藤一乗 (Gotō Ichijō) and later returned home to work independently. The subject, which the seller titles 旭日若松図 (Kyokujitsu wakamatsu zu), is the first sunrise of the new year: on one face a rising sun inlaid in gold emerges above a band of clouds sprinkled with very fine gold dust, while young pines grow beside a shoreline below, engraved with a lively, angular chisel stroke; the other face carries a pine branch and the signature beside the central opening. The iron is worked smooth and dense, and the restrained composition lets the bare metal speak. The photographs show an intact rim with no knocks and the gold complete; a few light specks and fine marks from use are visible on the surface. The original seller declares an NBTHK 特別保存刀装具 (tokubetsu hozon tōsōgu) paper and a fitted paulownia box; the paper does not appear in the photographs.
