The piece
Round mumei tsuba of the Awa Shōami school, with an anchor and its rope in high relief over a sea of engraved waves on a gilt ground.
Round tsuba, unsigned, attributed to the 阿波正阿弥 (Awa Shōami) school, the Awa province branch of the Kyoto Shōami tradition, known for its showy designs. The subject is a large-fluked anchor rising from rough waves, its twisted rope winding across both faces; the original seller links it to the scene of Taira no Tomomori sinking at Dan-no-ura bound to an anchor. According to the original seller, the core is yamagane wrapped in a thick gold sheet and finished with a gold fukurin; the photographs show the gilt surface with finely line-engraved waves, the anchor in takabori with a polished black tone and the grey rope in relief, a colour contrast typical of iroe. The reddish core shows inside the central opening. Declared dimensions: 84.8 × 84 mm, 4.7 mm thick at the seppa-dai. The photographs show good condition, with the gilding intact and crisp relief, and no visible knocks or rust. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper attributing it to Awa Shōami and a fitted paulownia box; the paper does not appear in the photographs.
