The piece

Shakudō kozuka with a nanako ground and Hotei reclining on his sack in takabori with gold and silver iroe, signed 後藤廉乗 (Gotō Renjō) with his kaō.

Kozuka signed 後藤廉乗 (Gotō Renjō) with his kaō, a master of the main line of the Gotō school and, according to the original seller, its tenth head. It depicts Hotei, the laughing monk whom Zen tradition associates with a simple life, reclining on his large sack; the original seller states that he is gazing at the moon. The photographs show a shakudō ground with fine, even nanako, and the figure in takabori with iroe: the sack, robe and a few leaves in gold, the body in silver and the staff in polished shakudō. The face, with a faint smile, is rendered with the precision typical of the school. The reverse, in plain polished shakudō, carries the engraved signature at the right end. Judging from the photographs the condition is good: the nanako is crisp, the gold keeps its brightness on the raised areas and the reverse shows only fine marks of use. It comes in a paulownia box with a fitted recess; the listing does not mention a hakogaki. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper, which does not appear in the photographs, and dimensions of 97 × 14.5 mm.
