The piece

A pair of mumei Ezo-school menuki with autumn grasses and insects pierced in yamagane with remains of gilding, with an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper.

A pair of unsigned menuki that the NBTHK paper attributes to the Ezo (蝦夷) school, the name given to large pierced menuki which, according to the original seller, were made in central Japan for trade with the Ainu, who exchanged them for bear skins. The subject, which the paper titles akikusa akimushi-zu (秋草秋虫図), "autumn grasses and insects", shows on each piece a long-antennaed insect among stems, leaves, flowers and fruit, all pierced and in bold relief. According to the paper, the metal is yamagane-ji (山銅地), an unrefined copper, worked in katachibori (容彫), carving in the round, and gilded, tokin (鍍金). The photographs show a thin gilding that survives in the recesses and has worn from the high points, where the dark metal shows through, and fine engraved lines on the insects' wings. The pieces are fairly large: about 2.4 × 5.6 cm and 2.3 × 6.1 cm, according to the seller. One of the menuki has a loss at one end, visible in the photographs and noted by the seller; the backs retain dark remains of old material. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu (特別保存刀装具) paper, no. 2012255, dated 26 June 2026, accepts them as unsigned Ezo work. They come in a paulownia box; the listing does not mention a hakogaki. The seller dates them to the late Muromachi to Momoyama period.
