Shikkake

尻懸派 (Shikkake-ha)

One of the five Yamato schools, founded by Norihiro: suguha with small gunome and a jigane with much nagare.

Style and characteristics

An itame jigane turning to nagare, with masame, and a suguha hamon with small gunome running along the edge, mixed with hotsure, nijū-ba and hakikake. It is the most «lively» of the Yamato tempers.

History

Norihiro, at the end of the Kamakura period, is taken as its founder, and his son Norinaga as the school’s great name; the character «Nori» recurs among its smiths. It has no National Treasure, but several tachi designated Important Cultural Properties. The Muromachi work is known as Sue-Shikkake.
