Shimada

島田派 (Shimada-ha)

The Shimada school, in Suruga: a Sagami style on the Tōkaidō, with the Yoshisuke and Sukemune for generations.

Style and characteristics

Strong nie and much activity (kinsuji, sunagashi) in a notare or gunome hamon over an itame jigane; also hitatsura hamon. It is a late Sagami style.

History

It worked from the mid-Muromachi to the mid-Edo period in the service of the Tōkaidō clans, above all the Imagawa; the names Yoshisuke and Sukemune were repeated for generations. A Yoshisuke is credited with the spear Otegine, one of the three great spears of Japan.
