Aoe Tsugiie
次家 (Tsugiie)
A smith of the Aoe school of Bitchū, of the Ko-Aoe, of the early Kamakura period; one of Go-Toba’s rotating smiths, for the month of August according to the most widely circulated list.
Profile
Tsugiie belongs to the Ko-Aoe, the first stage of the Aoe school of Bitchū, and worked in the early Kamakura period. The most widely circulated list of the rotating smiths (番鍛冶, bankaji) of the retired emperor Go-Toba gives him the month of August, and an old catalogue of signatures, the Kanchiin-bon Meizukushi, names him with Sadatsugu and Tsunetsugu among the Bitchū smiths summoned by the emperor.
His dates are unknown. A tachi signed «Tsugiie» at the Ise shrine, an important cultural property since 1965, is attributed to him, although the sources do not specify whether it is by the same Tsugiie of the rotation.
