Chōshū Akikuni

顕国 (Akikuni)

Lineage: the signature does not state the generation

A name borne by three generations of Nagato smiths, from the Nanbokuchō to the early Muromachi; the first is held to be a son or pupil of Yasuyoshi, of the Chikuzen Samonji school.

Profile

According to the biographical dictionary reproduced by Kotobank, the name Akikuni was borne by three generations of smiths in Nagato (Chōshū), at the western end of Honshū. The first two worked in the Nanbokuchō and the third around the Ōei era (1394-1428), already in the Muromachi.

The first is held to be a son or pupil of Yasuyoshi, one of the smiths of the Chikuzen Samonji school, which ties the family to that tradition on the other side of the strait. Of the second it is said that he ended up signing Yasukuni, but no work confirms it. The publishable sources give the period of each generation, not years of work.
