Echigo no Kami Kanesada
越後守包貞 (Echigo no Kami Kanesada)
Generation 2
Second Echigo no Kami Kanesada, a swordsmith of Ōsaka (Settsu) in the second half of the 17th century who later signed Sakakura Gonnoshin Terukane.
Profile
The second smith of the Echigo no Kami Kanesada line in Ōsaka, Settsu province. According to Japanese Wikipedia, he trained under the first Kanesada. When his master died in the late 1660s, the master's son Iwamatsu was still a child, so the pupil took over both name and title and signed Echigo no Kami Kanesada. Around 1680 he handed the name on to Iwamatsu, who became the third of the line, and from then on signed Sakakura Gonnoshin Terukane (坂倉言之進照包). Reference works count him among the representative smiths of Ōsaka shintō. His main hamon was the tōran-ba (濤瀾刃), the pattern of large rolling waves, alongside a broad gunome-midare that at times takes yahazu shapes; suguha blades in Sukehiro's manner are also attributed to him. The Yamada cutting list puts him in the second grade, that of ō-wazamono.
