Hida no Kami Ujifusa
飛騨守氏房 (Hida no Kami Ujifusa)
Lineage: the signature does not state the generation
Smith of the Seki line from Mino who settled in Kiyosu and later Nagoya, in Owari, active from the late 16th to the early 17th century.
Profile
The signature Hida no Kami Ujifusa covers the work of the second Ujifusa (氏房), son of Wakasa no Kami Ujifusa of the Seki school in Mino. Family tradition has him born in 1567, serving Oda Nobutaka in his youth alongside his father and, after the Honnō-ji incident of 1582, eventually settling in Kiyosu in Owari. In the early 1590s he received the title Hida no Kami, and when the domain seat moved to Nagoya around 1610 he followed it to the new castle town. He is counted, together with Masatsune and Nobutaka, among the leading smiths who carried the Mino tradition into Owari. He signed with long inscriptions such as 飛騨守藤原氏房 (Hida no Kami Fujiwara Ujifusa) or 飛騨守藤原朝臣氏房 (Hida no Kami Fujiwara no Ason Ujifusa). His blades follow Momoyama taste: wide, with a long kissaki, and a hamon of notare and gunome in nie. The Nagoya City Museum holds a katana by him.
