Hōki Hiroyoshi
広賀 (Hiroyoshi)
Lineage: the signature does not state the generation
Name of a family of Hōki smiths who appears in the late Muromachi period and continues for several generations; known for working in the Sagami tradition (Sōshū-den).
Profile
Hiroyoshi, which is also read Hiroga, is the name of a group of smiths of Hōki province, the western part of present-day Tottori. According to an exhibition of the Watanabe Sword Museum of Tottori, the group arose in the Muromachi period and became famous for working in the Sagami tradition, the Sōshū-den (相州伝). Japanese Wikipedia describes it as the Hōki school of that period.
The name passed from one generation to the next, and the Kotō Taikan reproduces blades by several of them, one by the third. Markus Sesko places Hōki Hiroyoshi among the smiths whose hamon shows a midare with wide, open valleys (koshi no hiraita midare). The sources consulted give no firm dates for each generation.
