Horii Tanetsugu

堀井胤次 (Horii Tanetsugu)

A modern smith of the secondary branch of the Horii house, the family of smiths that begins with Horii Taneyoshi and that worked in Muroran from 1918.

Profile

Horii Tanetsugu belongs to the secondary branch (分家, bunke) of the Horii house, according to the family genealogy given by Japanese Wikipedia in its article on Horii Toshihide, an article that cites no sources. The character 胤 (tane) that begins his name is the one of the house’s founder, Horii Taneyoshi, a pupil of Gassan Sadakazu and of Taikei Naotane, and of his successor, Horii Taneaki. The main line moved to Muroran, in Hokkaidō, in 1918; the sources consulted do not say where he worked, who his teacher was or in what years.

He has an entry in the Gendai Tōkō Meikan, and the Gendaitō Meisaku Zukan reproduces two blades by him, a tachi and a tantō.
