Ichimonji Sukenobu

助延 (Sukenobu)

A smith of Fukuoka Ichimonji, in Bizen, of the early Kamakura period; one of Go-Toba’s rotating smiths in 1208, with the title Bingo no Kami.

Profile

Sukenobu worked in Bizen, in the Fukuoka Ichimonji school, in the early Kamakura period. According to a biographical dictionary, in the second year of the Jōgen era (1208) he was one of the rotating smiths (番鍛冶, bankaji) of the retired emperor Go-Toba, to whom the most widely circulated list assigns the month of December, and he used the title Bingo no Kami. He signed 助延 (Sukenobu) or 備前国助延 (Bizen no kuni Sukenobu).

His dates are unknown, and the sources consulted attribute no protected work to him. He is not the Dewa no Kami Sukenobu of the Edo period, whose name is written with a different character.
