Ittetsusai Ōmichi

一徹斎大道 (Ittetsusai Ōmichi)

Generation 9

Swordsmith of the Mishina school based at Shiroko in Ise province, active in the mid-19th century.

Profile

Ittetsusai Ōmichi (一徹斎大道), whose name is also read Daidō, was a smith of the Mishina (三品) school. Born in 1793, he was working in the Kaei era (1848–1854). The family came from Kyoto and moved to Ise at a date and for reasons that are not known; he himself did not live in Kuwana but in Shiroko (白子), some 27 km to the south. He signed Ōmichi and used the art name Ittetsusai. He styled himself the ninth successor of Mutsu no Kami Ōmichi, the Momoyama-period smith with whom the school begins in Kyoto, a descent that has not been proven. He had three sons who also signed Ōmichi, or perhaps only two, since two of them may be one and the same person. His younger brother Hiromichi (広道) headed the Kuwana branch, carried on by Hirofusa (広房) and a second Hiromichi until the end of the Edo period.
