Kagehide
景秀 (Kagehide)
A Bizen smith of the Kamakura period, younger brother of Mitsutada according to tradition; a tachi signed with his name is an important cultural property.
Profile
Tradition makes Kagehide the younger brother of Mitsutada, the practical founder of the Osafune school, and has him working alongside him in Bizen in the Kamakura period. Publishable sources give no years of work for him.
His best-known work is a tachi signed «Kagehide», 73 cm, which belonged to the Ishikawa family, vassals of the Date, and which according to the Japanese Wikipedia is an important cultural property and is in a private collection in Ōsaka. Its temper, of very changing width, with very lively chōji and scattered spots (tobiyaki) that reach the shinogi, and a bold signature have led some to think it is the work of the Ichimonji school and not of Osafune.
