Profile

Kawano Sadamitsu (河野貞光) learned first from his father, the smith Kunimitsu, and in 1975 became a pupil of the living national treasure Gassan Sadakazu, who taught him forging and engraving and gave him the character sada of his name. He worked in Fukuoka prefecture, in the old province of Buzen, and has died, on a date not known.

He made mostly Kotetsu copies, with a tight steel and large gunome, and engraved his own blades; for their cutting he was called Ima Kotetsu, “the Kotetsu of today”. He won several effort prizes at the NBTHK new-work exhibition.
