Sukemune

助宗 (Sukemune)

Lineage: the signature does not state the generation

Name from the Shintō period appearing in a signature from Settsu; known only from it.

Profile

Sukemune (助宗) is a name from the Shintō period, borne by one or more smiths, of whom only what the signature says is known; it declares him a resident of Settsu: 摂州住助宗 (Sesshū-jū Sukemune). The signature does not give the generation, and the reference works consulted do not record his training, his master or his dates. He should not be confused with the Shimada Sukemune (島田助宗) of Suruga, of the Shimada (島田派) school: the younger brother of the first Yoshisuke (義助) took the name Sukemune, which three generations bore from roughly the Meiō era. It is not established that the Sukemune of Settsu was related to them.
