The piece

A 72.0 cm shinshintō blade in which both the blade and the mounting hold their own NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers; shirasaya, travel bag and maintenance kit included.

A shinshintō katana signed by Fujiwara Yoshihide. It measures 72.0 cm of nagasa with 1.5 cm of sori, a long outline of moderate curvature. What sets the piece apart is its documentation: the blade and the koshirae each hold their own NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper. The set also includes a shirasaya, a travel bag and a maintenance kit, so the blade can rest in storage while the mounting stays assembled. The original seller does not give the smith's province, makes no statement about the tang or the number of mekugi-ana, and the signature bears no date. On condition, he declares several small patches of black rust spread over the blade, which are worth examining in detail photographs before deciding.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
