The piece
A gassaku katana of the Mishina school of Kyoto, signed by Iga no Kami Kinmichi and Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi around the Genroku era, in shirasaya with a sayagaki by Satō Kanzan.
A gassaku (合作, gassaku) katana, a joint work by two smiths of the Mishina school of Kyoto: Iga no Kami Kinmichi, the third generation according to the original seller, and Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi, the fourth generation of the Kyoto line. Both houses descend from Kanemichi, who moved from Mino to Kyoto. The blade, with a nagasa of 69.5 cm and a sori of about 2 cm, has the Genroku-era shape: wide, with a thick kasane and a chū-kissaki, and bo-hi maru-dome on both sides, as the photographs show; they also show an undulating hamon of notare and gunome. According to the original seller, the jigane is itame with abundant ji-nie and chikei, the hamon carries kinsuji and sunagashi, and the bōshi turns back in komaru. The tang, intact judging by the photographs and with one mekugi-ana, bears on the omote the eda-kiku crest and the signature 日本鍛冶惣領宗匠伊賀守藤原金道 (Nihon kaji sōryō sōshō Iga no Kami Fujiwara Kinmichi), and on the ura the same crest and 丹波守吉道 (Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi). It is kept in a shirasaya with a sayagaki by Dr. Satō Kanzan and a gold-foiled double habaki. The original seller declares NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers. No koshirae is included.

Points to bear in mind
- The original seller notes a crack at the hamon boundary below the yokote and in the middle section, which he attributes to the severity of the hardening
- Offered without koshirae, in shirasaya only
- The papers do not appear in the photographs
- The generation of each smith is as stated by the original seller

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
