The piece
Katana by Doi Shinryō, signed and dated 1768, with an ubu tang, NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers and a Bakumatsu koshirae decorated with dragons.
Katana signed 土肥真了 (Doi Shinryō) on the omote of the tang and dated 明和五年八月日 (Meiwa go-nen hachigatsu hi), the 8th month of 1768, on the ura. According to the original seller, the Doi Shinryō line worked for the Matsura clan of Hirado, in Hizen, and carried on the style of Inoue Shinkai; the seller attributes the blade to the third generation, late in his career, without ruling out the fourth. Shinogi-zukuri with a low iori-mune and chū-kissaki, nagasa 69.2 cm and sori 1.5 cm. The seller describes a well-forged itame jigane mixed with mokume, with thick ji-nie and chikei, and a suguha-notare hamon of ko-nie with ashi, yō, kinsuji and sunagashi; straight bōshi with a short turn-back. The seller declares the blade healthy, in an old polish. The photographs show an ubu tang with kurijiri, ō-sujikai file marks and a single mekugi-ana. Double habaki in gilt copper. It comes with a Bakumatsu uchigatana-koshirae: black lacquered kizami saya, iron mokkō tsuba with a gold-inlaid dragon, signed shakudō fuchi-kashira and dragon menuki, with an old-system Tokubetsu Kichō Kodōgu paper. The blade holds NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers and, according to the listing, is also kept in a shirasaya.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
