The piece
Katana signed 山城守秀辰 (Yamashiro no Kami Hidetoki), early Edo period, with a notare hamon, an apparently unaltered tang, shirasaya and NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper.
Katana signed 山城守秀辰 (Yamashiro no Kami Hidetoki), a smith of the early Edo period who came from Mino and worked in Settsu, according to the original seller, who attributes it to the first generation on the basis of the signature. The blade has a nagasa of 72.47 cm and a sori of 1.25 cm, a balanced taper from base to tip and a chū-kissaki. According to the original seller, the jigane is a well-forged, dense ko-itame mixed with mokume, with ji-nie and fine chikei; the hamon is a notare with a bright nioiguchi, gunome ashi in the peaks and fine sunagashi, and the bōshi runs straight with a round turn-back on both sides. The photographs show the notare along the whole blade. The tang, which appears unaltered in the photographs, bears the signature on the omote and has two mekugi-ana. The blade is kept in shirasaya with a gold-foiled copper habaki. It comes with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper issued in 2023.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
