The piece
Edo-period katana signed by Ōmi no Kami Hisamichi, with an ubu tang, the imperial chrysanthemum above the signature and NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers; supplied with koshirae and shirasaya.
Blade by Ōmi no Kami Hisamichi, a smith of the Mishina school of Kyoto, identified by the original seller as the shodai: a pupil of the second-generation Iga no Kami Kinmichi, he received the title Ōmi no Kami in Kanbun 1 (1661), was permitted to engrave the imperial chrysanthemum and is counted among the five Kyoto smiths (Kyō go kaji). The photographs show an ubu tang with one mekugi-ana and, on the omote, the sixteen-petal chrysanthemum above the signature (菊紋)近江守源久道 (kikumon Ōmi no Kami Minamoto Hisamichi). Nagasa 71.8 cm, sori 1.1 cm, motohaba 3.2 cm and kasane 0.70 cm. According to the original seller, the jigane is a tight ko-itame with dense ji-nie and chikei; the hamon is gunome midare with long ashi, thick nie and kinsuji; the bōshi runs straight and turns back in ko-maru. The seller describes it as free of flaws. It wears a double habaki with silver foil. It comes with a shirasaya, declared by the seller, and with a koshirae of modern make: dark lacquered saya, tsuka with blue-green ito over same, gilt menuki and a tsuba engraved with tiger and bamboo. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers dated Reiwa 3 (2021).
