The piece

Katana by Taikei Naotane dated 1820, with an 83.5 cm nagasa and a signed ubu tang, designated Jūyō Tōken by the NBTHK; kept in shirasaya.

Katana by Taikei Naotane, the foremost pupil of Suishinshi Masahide and one of the great names of the shinshintō period, who put his master's doctrine of returning to the old blades into practice and excelled in both the Bizen and Sōshū traditions. Shinogi-zukuri blade with a maru-mune, of standard width and thickness, a fairly deep sori, moderate taper and an extended chū-kissaki; its 83.5 cm nagasa is a most unusual length. According to the original seller, the jigane is a tight ko-mokume with ji-nie and a soft midare-utsuri, and the hamon is gunome mixed with chōji and pointed elements, with ashi and yō, sections slanting in saka, deep nioi with ko-nie and tobiyaki; the bōshi is midare-komi with a ko-maru turn-back. The tang is ubu, with ō-sujikai yasurime and keshō, a kurijiri tip and one mekugi-ana; it is signed 出羽国住人大慶庄司直胤 (Dewa no kuni jūnin Taikei Shōji Naotane) with a kaō and dated on the ura 文政三年中秋 (Bunsei sannen chūshū). It is kept in shirasaya, with a single-piece gold-foiled copper habaki. Designated Jūyō Tōken by the NBTHK at its 68th session (2022); according to the original seller, it is the longest of this smith's blades to have received Jūyō designation.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
