The piece
Katana signed 摂津守源忠行 (Settsu no Kami Minamoto Tadayuki), mid-Edo period according to the original seller, with an ubu tang, in shirasaya and with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.
Katana signed 摂津守源忠行 (Settsu no Kami Minamoto Tadayuki), from the Settsu no Kami Tadayuki line, active in Ōsaka during the Edo period. According to the original seller, the first master was the younger brother or pupil of Awataguchi Ōmi no Kami Tadatsuna, moved from Kyoto to Ōsaka and worked there around the Enpō era; the name was carried on over several generations. The seller places this blade in the mid-Edo period. It is a shinogi-zukuri blade with iori-mune, 68.17 cm in nagasa and 1.5 cm in sori, with a chū-kissaki. According to the original seller, the jigane is a slightly standing itame with ji-nie; the hamon is gunome midare mixed with chōji, with ko-ashi and plentiful nie; the bōshi is straight with a small, fairly deep kaeri; there is muneyaki in places. The photographs show an irregular midare hamon along the whole blade. The tang is ubu, with ō-sujikai yasurime, an iriyama-gata tip and one mekugi-ana, as the photographs confirm. It is kept in shirasaya with a silver-foiled copper habaki. The seller declares NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers issued in 2009.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
