The piece

Katana by Bitchū no Kami Kiyonobu of the Tokunaga school of Seki (Mino), with a signed ubu tang inscribed as forged from nanbantetsu; declared Tokubetsu Hozon paper, kept in shirasaya.

Katana by Bitchū no Kami Kiyonobu, a smith of Seki in Mino province. According to the original seller, he was the son of Ōmi no Kami Kiyonobu, received the title Bitchū Daijō in Shōhō 2 (1645) and that of Bitchū no Kami around the following year, belonged to the Tokunaga school, one of the seven lines of Seki, and served as head of the Seki smiths, as his father had. The seller places the blade around the Kanbun era, with the wide, robust shape typical of shintō of that period. It measures 70.0 cm in nagasa, with 1.1 cm of sori, a motohaba of 3.35 cm and a kasane of 0.7 cm. According to the seller, the hamon is a ko-gunome midare tending towards straight with chōji ashi, the jigane a tight ko-itame and the bōshi a komaru with turn-back; the photographs show an undulating hamon of small gunome with ashi. The tang is ubu, with one mekugi-ana and sujikai yasurime; the omote is signed 備中守藤原清宣 (Bitchū no Kami Fujiwara Kiyonobu) and the ura bears 於美濃関以南蛮鉄作之 (Mino Seki ni oite nanbantetsu o motte kore o tsukuru), stating that the blade was forged from imported steel. Single-piece silver habaki inlaid with a wisteria mon. Kept in shirasaya, without mounting. The seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper.

The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
