The piece
Jūyō Tōken katana by Jirōtarō Naokatsu, pupil and adopted son of Taikei Naotane, signed and dated 1842, with an ubu tang, shirasaya and a black-lacquered uchigatana mounting.
Katana by Jirōtarō Naokatsu, pupil and later adopted son of Taikei Naotane, a smith in the service of the Akimoto clan of Tatebayashi who worked in Edo during the shinshintō period. The blade, shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune, measures 80.7 cm in nagasa with 2.05 cm of sori: broad, with a thick kasane, little taper from base to tip and an extended chū-kissaki. According to the Jūyō documentation, the jigane is itame with dense jinie, chikei and midare-utsuri; the hamon combines kataochi-gunome with angular heads, chōji and pointed elements, with ashi, yō and kinsuji, and the bōshi runs in midare and ends in a pointed ko-maru. The tang is ubu, with a single mekugi-ana, signed 次郎太郎直勝 (Jirōtarō Naokatsu) and dated 天保壬寅年十月日 (Tenpō mizunoe-tora-doshi jūgatsu hi), that is, 1842. The NBTHK designated it Jūyō Tōken at its 68th session (2022), and the photographs show the certificate and the zufu page. It comes with a shirasaya and an uchigatana mounting with a black-lacquered saya, which the original seller describes without dating it; the photographs show a pierced iron tsuba and a tsuka wrapped in brown leather.
