The piece

Katana by Ōmi Daijō Tadahiro, the second master of the Hizen school, with a long signature on an ubu tang and NBTHK Jūyō Tōken designation; kept in shirasaya.

Katana signed by Ōmi Daijō Tadahiro, the second master of the Hizen school founded by Tadayoshi and one of the central figures of the shintō period. The tang is ubu, with a single mekugi-ana and the long signature 肥前国住近江大掾藤原忠広 (Hizen no Kuni-jū Ōmi Daijō Fujiwara Tadahiro), clearly legible in the photographs; the original seller describes katte-sagari file marks. The blade, shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune and chū-kissaki, has a nagasa of 72.2 cm and a sori of 1.3 cm. According to the original seller, the jigane is a tightly packed ko-itame with fine ji-nie, and the hamon a hiro-suguha with gentle notare, deep nioi, ko-ashi, kinsuji and sunagashi, with a straight bōshi and ko-maru turn-back. The seller describes it as very healthy, flawless and without loss of meat from polishing. The NBTHK designated it Jūyō Tōken at the 17th session, in Shōwa 43 (1968); the photographed certificate, no. 2797, is a reissue of Heisei 12 (2000) replacing the lost original document. The designation text regards it as a late work of the second Tadahiro. It is kept in shirasaya with a brass habaki, without koshirae.

Strong points

  • NBTHK Jūyō Tōken (17th session, 1968)
  • Long signature on an ubu tang with a single mekugi-ana
  • The master's characteristic hiro-suguha, according to the original seller
  • Blade described as very healthy, with no loss from polishing

Points to bear in mind

  • The original designation paper was lost; the photographed certificate is a reissue of Heisei 12 (2000).
  • No mounting: the blade is offered in shirasaya only.
  • The hamon and jigane activity rests on the original seller's description; the photographs do not allow it to be made out.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
