The piece
Katana by Masayuki of Satsuma, dated the second month of Kansei 7 (1795), with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers and a mounting with a kawarinuri saya.
Katana by Masayuki, a smith of Satsuma province active in the Kansei era and, according to the original seller, of the Miyahara Masachika school; the seller adds that he took the title Hōki no Kami in Kansei 1 (1789). The blade has a nagasa of 71.52 cm and a sori of 1.82 cm: wide and thick, with a long kissaki. According to the original seller, the jigane is well-forged ko-itame with jinie and chikei, the hamon a gunome midare with a dense nioiguchi, sunagashi and kinsuji, and the bōshi notare with hakikake. The photographs show an intact tang with one mekugi-ana, signed 伯耆守平朝臣正幸 (Hōki no Kami Taira no Ason Masayuki) on the omote and dated 寛政七年卯二月 (Kansei shichinen u nigatsu) on the ura. The mounting has a kawarinuri lacquered saya, a round iron tsuba pierced with a flowering plum tree (Higo school, according to the seller), gold-toned dragon menuki and copper fuchi-kashira with ume blossoms; the habaki is a gilt double habaki. The seller also declares a shirasaya. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers issued in Heisei 11 (1999).
